Pledge – ‘A Labour council would reinstate frontline service cash’After Conservatives £11m raid on ‘street scene’ budget, Labour would reinvest to keep Northumberland ‘clean and green’
Labour have pledged to reinvest in Northumberland’s ‘clean and green’ services after social media reports across Ashington, Cramlington and Blyth about the state of Clean and Green Services delivered by the County Council following an £11m raid on the most popular services with the public for example grass cutting, street and gully cleaning, shrub planting and floral displays and have also promised they will help town council’s with more dog and rubbish bins.
Labour is also announcing plans for a ‘crackdown on dog fouling’ with a promise of stricter enforcement of rules on litter and anti-social behaviour.
Labour say they will reduce the council’s reliance on outside contractors to deliver IT systems and will ensure apprentices when training have a live experienced person overseeing their work and guiding them when dealing with queries. They will also make a range of savings in the council’s massive IT budget which spent £14m last year primarily on contract staff from outside Northumberland which supplies £zero into the local economy.
Labour group members told us:
‘For too long, the Conservatives have neglected Northumberland’s environment and this year’s £11m raid on the budget for keeping the county clean and tidy is a cut too far when coupled with the £5.5m cut on the same services last year. Labour will reverse this swathing and damaging cut that will be paid for after the May 2025 elections by tackling the out of control IT budget which swallowed up over £14m last year alone’.
‘We’ll make sure that money and resources are invested in frontline services and we’ll work with the staff to come up with innovative ways to keep Northumberland pristine. We’ll also make sure that the county council has zero tolerance of dog fouling and we’ll make sure that irresponsible dog owners get that message’.
